Belong, Believe, Achieve
Area of Learning Experience Vision
At Evenlode, we believe that strong communication skills are at the heart of successful learning. Through our Languages, Literacy and Communication curriculum, we aim to ensure that all pupils make meaningful progress in English oracy, reading and writing, alongside developing confidence and fluency in spoken Welsh.
We strive to foster a love of language by creating engaging opportunities for pupils to read widely, write purposefully and discuss ideas thoughtfully. We want all learners to become confident communicators who can express themselves clearly, listen respectfully and engage effectively with others.
We are committed to promoting a positive Welsh-speaking culture where the language is valued, celebrated and used naturally throughout school life. By providing meaningful opportunities to speak Welsh, we aim to build pupils’ confidence, fluency and pride in using the language.
Through our Languages, Literacy and Communication curriculum, we aim to develop confident communicators who enjoy reading, write with purpose, express themselves clearly and take pride in using both English and Welsh.
Literacy at Evenlode is taught through high quality novels, non fiction text and pictures books. Each year group from Year 2 up will have a novel or non fiction text for the half term, that will be their focus text. Pupils will work on developing their reading, writing and oracy skills using this as the hook for their learning.
Reception and Year 1 will use picture books weekly as the hook for their literacy, with all books being linked to the half termly topic.
Pupils are introduced to our phonics scheme 'Jolly Phonics' in Reception. They learn all 26 phonemes and 15 of the most common blends. Pupils in Year 1 and 2 continue to follow the Jolly Grammar which widens their knowledge of phonics and blends.
Pupils in all years will be given words to learn weekly in school. These words will be based on familiar word patterns as well as the high frequency words all pupils need to learn before leaving primary school. Pupils who can spell these words will be given more difficult and challenging words which will help to stretch their vocabulary.
All pupils from Year 1 up will take part in daily guided reading sessions which are designed to develop all pupils reading skills. Pupils will be grouped to ensure they are all reading a challenging text.
Pupils in Foundation Phase will progress through learning high frequency words that are common in many books. These words are split into sets that match to the different reading stages. Once pupils can read all of these words by sight they move on to chapter books.
