Year 4

WELCOME TO YEAR FOUR

CLASS INFORMATION

Welcome to Pine and Maple

Come and meet the team!  The class teachers are Mr Jennings (Maple) and Mrs Almond (Pine).

CURRICULUM INFORMATION

OUR TOPICS!

We start the Autumn term with our hook ‘FAMILY’, in which we learn about the Tudors, look different types of families and look at themes from our class novels 'The Boy at the Back of the Class' and 'Coming to England'.

In the spring term, we study our topic 'OUR WORLD' and use 'Kensuke's Kingdom' to guide our Literacy learning.

In the Summer during our 'INNOVATION' topic we read the non-fiction text 'Cool Architecture'.

LITERACY

Spelling - pupils will be given words weekly to work on in school. These words will be based on familiar word patterns as well as the high frequency words all pupils need to learn before leaving primary school.

Reading - All pupils from will take part in daily reading sessions (included Guided Reading, Shared Reading and Reciprocal Reading) which are designed to develop all pupils reading skills. In groups pupils will read and discuss a range of texts.

Writing - through the focus on novels / non-fiction texts, pupils will write using a range of genres with word and sentence level focus through to extended pieces of writing.

MATHS

In Maths we cover a wide range of topics in line with the Curriculum for Wales. These include the four operations, Place Value, Shape and Space, Measures and Data Handling. Opportunities for problem solving and investigation work are provided across these topics. Lessons are differentiated to ensure all pupils are receiving work appropriate to their level of ability. Pupils answer a range of mental maths questions on a daily basis.

HOMEWORK

As times table knowledge is so important, we will be sending times table homework every Friday.  Please return the completed homework sheet by Tuesday, when it will be marked in class.  Any homework returned after Tuesday will not be marked.   Chanting times tables as you walk up and down stairs is an excellent way of integrating maths into your daily life.
See the links below to support the learning of times tables.
